  • three batty bats

  • The phrase probably derives from Walt Kelly's comic strip Pogo, where there were a trio of bats named "Bewitched", "Bothered", and "Bemildred". That trio was without doubt a parody of the song "Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered", originating in the 1940 Rodgers and Hart musical _Pal Joey_ but very often performed and recorded since then.
